Atlantic City International Airport Absecon is the airport serving Atlantic City, New Jersey, United States. It is also known as Atlantic City International or ACI and has a single runway designated 17/35. The airport is located in Egg Harbor Township, Atlantic County and has flights to several major cities in the United States.
The airport first opened in 1929 as a small airfield on the property of the Atlantic City Hotel and Casino. The Civil Aeronautics Administration (CAA) took over operations of the facility and it became a military airfield during World War II. After the war, the CAA transferred control of the airport to civilian authorities. The original terminal building was destroyed by fire. In response, CAA constructed a new terminal building.
In 1970, an extension of runway 17/35 was completed and Concourse A opened. This addition increased capacity by 50 percent and allowed for jetliner service. In 1986, Concourse B was added and this expanded the terminal to its present size of . The original terminal building was demolished in 1992 and replaced with a parking garage.
The airport has been through several name changes since its establishment. It was originally known as Atlantic City Airport before becoming Atlantic City International Airport in 1978.
